Gigi's Cupcakes of Beavercreek, Ohio honored in Afghanistan.

For Gigi's Cupcakes of Beavercreek, Ohio, near Dayton, this past Valentine's Day was more than just Cupid and cupcakes. Gigi's set out to do something special for the families of military personnel based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base located just a few minutes fro the store. So, on Valentine's Day 2013 Gigi's delivered 78 dozen cupcakes for free, to the families who had family members deployed overseas.

Then, just a few weeks ago an overnight package arrived at the Gigi's store. "The package was from Afghanistan.  In the box was a certificate, an American flag folded Military style and a handwritten note.  To say we were all overwhelmed with emotion is putting it mildly," tells Gigi's Cupcakes of Beavercreek owner Bob Schumann. "Our entire team was in tears."

It turns out that the flag, certificate and personal letter were from Major Lindsey Finkbeiner, a surgeon deployed to Kuwait. Major Finkbeiner and her husband, a General in the Air Force have a 12 year old son and the family lives at the base. With Gigi's help, Major Finkbeiner arranged for her son to receive cupcakes and a personal message from mom on Valentine's Day. So, on February 14, Gigi's baker LeeAnn Nash, whose own husband is a Major in the Army and currently deployed to Bahrain, presented the cupcakes and a message from his mother to the Finkbeiner's son at the Finkbeiner's home.

Major Finkbeiner wrote in her letter that she and her husband were so touched by that act of kindness that she wanted to do something special for Gigi's.  And, that's where the flag and the certificate that accompanied the flag come in.

"This is to certify the accompanying American flag was flown on the 20th day of February 2013, in your honor aboard a USAF C-17A Globemaster III aircraft, tail number 06-6166 during combat missions over the skies of Afghanistan."

Thank you Major Finkbeiner, General Finkbeiner and Major Nash, and thank you to all of the moms and dads, sons and daughters, and friends serving in our military around the world!
